Understanding the Most Powerful Explosions in the Universe (IMAGE)
Caption
Gamma-ray bursts are the most powerful explosions in the universe. Prof Soebur Razzaque from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) led a team of researchers modelling the behaviour of the first and second explosions in gamma-ray bursts. Their model closely matched the data captured from giant flare GRB 200415A, the first time that the second explosion has been detected and recorded by scientists. The flare erupted from a magnetar in the galaxy NGC 253 in the Sculptor constellation, 11.4 million light years from earth.
