South African Dung Beetles Were Tested (IMAGE) Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Caption South African dung beetles were tested in an indoor arena equipped with LEDs (sun), fans (wind), and a video camera to see whether beetles with and without antennae could follow a 180° switch in wind direction. Beetles with antennae (A) changed heading by 180° to match the wind, while beetles without antennae (B) did not show an obvious pattern in direction change (but instead used the sun for orientation), suggesting that the wind sensor lies in the antennae.
