Estimated Emission Reductions Achieved in the Carbon-Intensive Industry, 2010-2050 (IMAGE)
Caption
The colored fields (wedges) show estimated emission reductions achieved in the carbon-intensive industry in the period 2010-2050, assuming ambitious deployment of technologies and measures that are currently commercially available. Despite the extensive measures that are assumed to be implemented, the results indicate that the industrial sectors will fail to comply with the long-term reduction targets, unless a major breakthrough in new low-carbon process technologies such as CCS materializes between now and 2050. The emission reductions are relative to a reference case (dashed grey line) in which technology and fuel mixes are frozen at Year 2010 levels. The solid grey line indicates the emission trajectory that would fulfill the emission reduction targets, i.e., 40% reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by Year 2030 and 85% by Year 2050 as compared to the levels in 2010.
