A Genetic Network Map for Yeast (IMAGE)

Millions of pair-wise gene combinations were tested for genetic interactions in the budding yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and the results were visualized as a network. Nodes represent genes that are connected to each other if they share genetic interactions. The network self-assembles such that all genes are positioned relative to one another based upon functional similarity, leading to discrete clusters representing all major cellular processes and generating a global functional map of the cell. This image relates to an article that appeared in the Jan. 22, 2010, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Michael Costanzo of the University of Toronto in Ontario, Canada, and colleagues, was titled, "The Genetic Landscape of a Cell."
