image: Millions of pair-wise gene combinations were tested for genetic interactions in the budding yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and the results were visualized as a network. Nodes represent genes that are connected to each other if they share genetic interactions. The network self-assembles such that all genes are positioned relative to one another based upon functional similarity, leading to discrete clusters representing all major cellular processes and generating a global functional map of the cell. The study, by Dr. Michael Costanzo of the University of Toronto in Ontario, Canada, and colleagues, was titled, "The Genetic Landscape of a Cell." view more
