MRI images of mice showing (in a lighter color) the increase of body fat when a high fat diet is fed to them. Macrophages interpret these changes as a sign of danger, and there is an ensuing differentiation of M1 macrophages, characterized by an accumulation of fat droplets (shown in green). The M1s increase the inflammation and damage associated with obesity. When gene Fgr is disactivated, macrophages become less sensitive to stress signals, and maintain their anti-inflammatory protective role (M2), reducing body fat accumulation.
