Weather and Climate Strand Maps (IMAGE)
Caption
The Atlas of Science Literacy, Volume 2, published by Project 2061, the science-education reform initiative at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), includes "conceptual strand maps" to support science literacy, such as this illustration on Weather and Climate. In the hands of skilled K-12 teachers, Atlas maps provide a grade-by-grade guide toward science literacy. To follow the global climate-change issue, for example, students need to understand key physical and social-science concepts; appreciate the benefits and risks of various energy resources and technologies; and be aware of the need to support claims and arguments with sound evidence. Atlas 2 and its companion volume were jointly released by AAAS and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) to provide teachers with a grade-by-grade guide to science learning from kindergarten through 12th grade.
