SARS-CoV関連ウイルスのORF3bタンパク質に比べ、SARS-CoV-2関連ウイルスのORF3bタンパク質のインターフェロン抑制活性は顕著に高い。また、現在流行しているSARS-CoV-2の中で、ORF3b遺伝子の長さが部分的に伸長することにより、インターフェロン抑制活性が増強している変異体が出現していることを見いだした。
