標準的な化学療法は、化学療法の最大耐用量（MTD）に依存しており、薬剤感受性癌細胞だけでなく本来の免疫反応細胞を含む健康な血管や間質細胞を死滅させることで、薬剤耐性集団を常に選抜している。Enriquez-Navasらが提唱している生態進化学モデルは、低用量高頻度化学療法により、感受性集団と耐性集団の平衡を維持することで、腫瘍増殖を制御することを目指す。2種類の乳癌のマウス異種移植片モデルを用いたこの研究は、疾患進行を防ぎ持続的に制御するうえで、この方法が標準的なMTDアプローチよりも有効となり得ることを示している。
