While in lockdown for the COVID-19 virus in Milan, Italy, Cristiano Galbiati, a professor of physics at Princeton University, recognized the need for additional ventilators and received government permission to develop a prototype. Six weeks later, after round-the-clock work by physicists and engineers from nine countries, his ventilator secured FDA approval. Production starts this week, with an expected initial run of 50 ventilators per day.
