Caption
Paleontologists Dr. Louis Jacobs (right), Southern Methodist University, and Dr. Anthony Fiorillo (left), Perot Museum of Nature and Science, Dallas, discuss 23 million-year-old Desmostylia fossils from the Aleutian Islands. The fossils intensify the mystery surrounding the toothy, hippopotamus-sized mammal unique to the North Pacific. An oddball creature, it suction-fed shoreline vegetation.
