University of Utah anthropology professor Jack Broughton and doctoral student Isaac Hart examine ancient bones of rabbits and other small mammals. In a new study, they found that at times during the past 10,000 years, rabbit and hare populations boomed in Baja California, Mexico, when the El Niño climate phenomenon drenched the Pacific Coast with rain, promoting growth of plants eaten by the animals. The study might help researchers better understand how future climate change will affect small animals.
