Fieldwork in the service of clean science: Christian Hallmann, Katherine French, Roger Buick and Les Bonzer drilled into sediments dating back 2.5 to 2.8 billion years. As they succeeded in protecting the samples from contamination, they were able to prove that the first eukaryotes probably originated more than a billion years later than some researchers had previously assumed.
