Using NIST's Fire Dynamics Simulator, the researchers attempted to digitally replicate real-world experiments where they lit a fire in a 747's overhead compartment, filling it with smoke. The video above offers a look at one of several simulations, which together closely approximated the temperatures measured in the real aircraft.
