Fig 2 Illustration of the Black-Golden Phase Transition (IMAGE)
Caption
During the black-golden phase transition the samarium atoms become smaller while the crystal structure remains the same. The spacing between the atoms in the crystal is reduced as heat is added, so it shrinks. The amount of volume change depends on the rare earth metal dopant as well as its proportion. The crystal itself changes from an insulator to a metal.
