Comparison (IMAGE)
Caption
Comparison of nine-day-old mouse embryo grown in the womb (left) and a Trunk-Like-Structure (right). The neural tube, that eventually makes the spinal cord, is colored in pink. All other tissues, including the somites, which eventually form bone, muscle and cartilage, are colored blue. Whereas generation of mouse embryos requires animal experimentation, the Trunk-Like-Structure is generated solely from stem cells, thereby circumventing the need for animal experiments.
