Bo Christiansen, University of Copenhagen (IMAGE) University of Copenhagen Caption A University of Copenhagen chemist has discovered a naturally occurring substance, green rust, that is capable of encapsulating and containing the nuclear waste-product neptunium. It's an insight that can greatly influence how and where to dispose of radioactive waste. "Our study shows that even the safest encapsulation of radioactive waste could be made safer if radioactive waste canisters are buried in a place where green rust will form," explains the U of C chemist Bo C.
