Figure 1: This is the experimental set-up for production, trapping and cooling for highly-charged ions (HCIs, here Ar13+). (1): Electron beam ion trap (EBIT) for HCI breeding, (2): beamline for deceleration and pre-cooling of the ions, (3) Paul trap CryPTEx with laser-cooled Be+ ions. The fluorescence light of the beryllium ions is monitored by a CCD camera.
