As drug companies take steps to limit the ways prescription painkillers can be misused and abused, researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis are learning that although abuse-deterrent formulas have cut the number of people abusing drugs, those new formulas don't eliminate abuse. In addition, they continue to confirm that many drug users are switching to a cheaper and more dangerous alternative: heroin.
