University of Utah anthropologist Adrian Bell used mathematics to evaluate various theories on what strategies early seafarers used to settle islands of the Pacific between 3,500 and 900 years ago. He found two key strategies were traveling against the wind and looking for the most easily visible islands, not necessarily the nearest ones.
