This illustration shows the phylogenetic tree of FMO enzymes. The ancestral enzymes proved to be stable enough to study and revealed how FMOs metabolize toxic substances. This made it possible to reconstruct the effect of disease-causing mutations in FMO genes, like the mutation causing fish odour syndrome.
