新たな系統樹では、スファエロシロアリ亜科（赤）はシロアリ科内のキノコシロアリ亜科（青）の姉妹群4として位置づけられた。 この二つの亜科は、シロアリ塚の内部で菌園を造るという珍しい特徴をもつ。
