Scientists Get in Touch with the Biology Underlying Pain (IMAGE)
Caption
M. Szczot and colleagues discovered that neurons in mice deficient in Piezo2 registered pinching stimuli (pink) but not gentle brushing stimuli (green), unlike neurons in control mice. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the Oct. 10, 2018, issue of Science Translational Medicine, published by AAAS. The paper, by S.E. Murthy at Howard Hughes Medical Institute in La Jolla, CA; and colleagues was titled, "The mechanosensitive ion channel Piezo2 mediates sensitivity to mechanical pain in mice."
