Suomi NPP Image of Yutu (IMAGE) NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center Caption Super Typhoon Yutu has made a direct hit on Tinian Island. This image from NASA-NOAA's Suomi NPP satellite was lit by a full moon. The eye was very well defined had ample tropospheric gravity waves generated by the intense convection. A "brightening" on the northeastern part of the eye, is not lightning, but perhaps the moonlight being reflected off of ice particles or something else.
