Algae and bacteria in the ocean have a great impact on the equilibrium between the drawdown and release of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere and therefore on the global climate. However, only using detailed chemical and microbiological methods enables investigation on the mechanisms driving the organic carbon cycle and predicting future climate.
