A humpback whale surfaces to breathe in the Atlantic Ocean off the northern coast of the Dominican Republic. A consortium of researchers from the Wildlife Conservation Society, Stanford University, the American Museum of Natural History, and others have conducted a wide-ranging genetic study to determine just how many humpback whales existed in the North Atlantic before whaling.
