A humpback whale calf breaches. Using hundreds of genetic samples from whales across the Atlantic and from the Southern Hemisphere, the research team calculated that the North Atlantic once contained more than 100,000 whales, two to three times the amount calculated from old whaling records, and four to five times the current abundance for the population.
