Movement of the chick embryo and the effects of immobilisation on the knee joint. A and B are successive still frames from a movie of a chick embryo developing in the egg after 7 days incubation. The stills are approximately 1 second apart. Note the position of the limbs in successive stills. C is a section through a normal developing knee joint at this stage of development; note the clear separation between the femur and the tibia (stained blue) where they interface at the knee joint. D is a similar section through an embryo that was immobilised; note the lack of separation (fusion) of the forming bones at the knee joint.
