How to Find Toxic Heavy Metals More Rapidly in Foods and Water (VIDEO)
Caption
ONLINE VIDEO PREVIEW: Toxic heavy metals like mercury, arsenic and cadmium should not get into our food and drinking water. But due to mining, various industries and agricultural practices, these can end up in vegetables and even in bottled water at levels that can make people sick. Worse, it is a time-consuming and complex affair to find out which trace metals, and how much, are present in vegetables. Researchers at the University of Johannesburg developed a much faster, simpler method to find metals in foods and water. It uses the clay-based nanocomposite material which they developed. The adsorbent 'catches' the ions of several heavy metals at the same time, making possible much faster, simultaneous testing.
