Caption

The XENON1T detector suspended at the center of its surrounding water Cherenkov shield. The detector is a time projection chamber filled with liquid xenon. It is encased in a double walled stainless steel container for heat insulation. The surrounding water Cherenkov detector tags cosmic ray muons using the same detector technology as Super-Kamiokande, and was first used to shield a dark matter detector at the XMASS experiment in Kamioka.
