This is a schematic of the experimental setup. Coherent x-rays are directed through a pinhole onto the sample, and a detector captures the intensity of light as it is reflected off the sample. The intensity of the signal is reduced near the domain boundaries. On the basis of this 'interference,' scientists can determine where the boundaries are arranged in space.
