This device transfers the energy of flow with higher pressure to the flow with lower pressure, hence elevating the pressure at the outlet. Based on the same concept, flow through the superior vena cava can be assisted by flow through the shunt to obtain a higher pressure in the pulmonary artery without increasing superior vena cava pressure.
