In nature, the activity of individual elements, such as neurons, often seems dominated by noise, or "randomness". Numerical simulations of a simple neuronal network exemplify how suitable connections can make more predictable patterns arise, such as the generation of "bursts" (left). In cell cultures growing over recording electrode arrays, neurons located within regions having high connectivity generate more predictable spike trains (right).
