P < 0.0001: significance by the Mann-Whitney test. b Frequency distribution of non-pungent fruits and pungent fruits with the number of seeds. The pungency of 'Shishito' fruits was inspected by test subjects licking the placental septa of a total of 454 fruits, and they were classified as pungent and non-pungent fruits.
