Simulated thawing of 2.5-m-wide block of permafrost, in cold room. In each photo, the left half of the block models a homogeneous frozen soil with low ice content, and the right half models an ice-rich permafrost with vertical ice wedges. The experiment demonstrated that ice-rich permafrost undergoes extensive erosion while thawing.
