Physicists cannot directly see where cosmic rays come from, so they search instead for objects that produce gamma rays with energies similar to those of cosmic rays. The four VERITAS telescopes at Mt. Hopkins in Arizona (above) look for the fleeting signatures of gamma-ray collisions with Earth's atmosphere overhead.
