Developing Drugs that Protect Against Radiation (VIDEO)
Caption
Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals doctors Adam Dicker, M.D., Ph.D., professor and chairman of radiation oncology and Ulrich Rodeck, M.D., Ph.D., a professor of dermatology, cutaneous biology and radiation oncology have used zebrafish for more than six years in an effort to identify compounds that could protect people against radiation. A major challenge of developing such drugs is finding suitable compounds that might work in people, whether they are cancer patients or have been exposed to radiation in a man-made disaster such as occurred in Japan after the tsunami or could occur in a terrorist attack using nuclear materials.
