High Chair-Related Injuries To Children On The Rise (VIDEO)

Researchers have conducted the largest and longest study of high chair injuries among children in the US, and have found that these injuries are on the rise. "There are more than 9,400 of these injuries a year in this country -- that's a child every hour of every day treated in an emergency department for an injury associated with a high chair," said Gary Smith, MD, DrPH, director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital. The researchers analyzed more than 75 thousand cases between 2003-2010, and found that the number of injuries to children associated with high chairs during this time surged more than 22 percent. Part of the problem is that nearly three and a half million faulty high chairs and booster seats have been recalled in the last five years alone. "But, there is also an issue that the chair safety restraints are not always used or used correctly, which can quickly lead to dangerous situations," said Smith.
