Radiation (IMAGE)
Caption
At infrared wavelengths (5 microns), the Keck II telescope detects thermal radiation from the deep atmosphere. In this mosaic of the area around Jupiter's red ovals, all three spots appear dark because clouds obscure heat emanating from lower elevations. Bright regions have reduced cloud cover, showing leakage of heat into space.
