Corals from the Twilight Zone: Who Eats What on a Deep Red Sea Reef (3 of 3) (IMAGE)
Caption
Using remote operated underwater vehicles (ROVs), a group of researchers from Monaco Explorations, the Inter-University Institute (IUI), the Monaco Scientific Centre, and Bar-Ilan University, is collaborating on a new project to study coral reefs that are found below scuba diving depth. Little is known about these deep-water reef systems, but they may be very important for the survival of coral reefs under global climate change, and accessing these places using technical diving and ROVs is a crucial part of the current mission. In this photo researchers on board the research vessel Sam Rothberg operate a robot at a depth of 100m to sample organisms.
