Converging UV laser beams illuminate flat plastic targets to produce expanding plasma shockwaves. The waves interact to produce a new instability, seen for the first time in the laboratory, using a beam of protons at the OMEGA laser facility at the University of Rochester Laboratory for Laser Energetics.
