Lisa Goessling, staff research associate in the Department of Biology at Washington University in St. Louis, pipettes samples into the assay block that will identify pathogens and the source of the tick's last blood meal. She developed the assay together with Robert Thach, Ph.D., professor of biology in Arts & Sciences (in the background). It's much harder to assay blood from a tick than from a mosquito because the tick feeds only once per stage and may have had months to digest a blood meal.
