沖縄周辺の6地点で採取したサンプルのすべてからマイクロプラスチック（プラスチックの小さな破片）が発見された。これらのサンプルをOISTの研究室で分析したところ、各サンプル中のプラスチックの大きさや分子構造、濃度が明らかになった。
