砂礫（砂や小石）が岩にぶつかると大きく跳ね返って遠くまで飛ばされ、似た大きさの砂礫のかたまりにぶつかるとそこで止まる。研究者らはこれを「反跳選別現象（ballistic sorting）」と名付けた。
