The tegu, Salvator merianae, is an omnivore. As a juvenile, its diet consists of insects, snails, fruits and seeds. The adult tegu also consumes these, but becomes more predatory, eating reptile and bird eggs as well as small birds. Here, a captive tegu is fed a baby chicken.
