This is an immature maize ear with a mutation in a newly identified stem cell factor that affects plant growth. Note the irregular shape of the tip of the ear, the stem cell reservoir called the meristem. Tweaking the working of a receptor called FEA2 in the CLAVATA signaling pathway pathway will impact plant yield.
