Peptides conjugated to dopamine are pre-reduced to hydroquinone and then self-assembled to QDs. At low pH, hydroquinone is predominant and as a poor electron acceptor this results in low QD photoluminescence (PL) quenching. As pH increases, ambient O2 in the buffer oxidizes dopamine producing a hydrogen peroxide species. The increasing quinone concentration provides favorable electron acceptors in close proximity to the QD. This produces higher quenching efficiencies with a magnitude directly proportional to the amount of quinone and hence pH.
