The Cellular Neighborhoods Where Zika Hides Out (IMAGE)
Caption
Researchers at the University of Toronto studying interactions between Zika virus proteins and proteins from human cells found that the Zika protein NS2A (green) and the peroxisome marker PMP70 (red) are highly colocalized (yellow when merged). This observation led them to discover that the peroxisome, an organelle involved in antiviral signaling, is also required for Zika virus replication. The team collected interactomic data for all ten Zika proteins. The study, reported in Molecular & Cellular Proteomics, may drive future findings in Zika virology.
