The scientists are also developing computer models of heart tissue are multicellular versions of a mathematical model of a cardiac cell developed by WUSTL scientist Yorum Rudy. Shown here is a model of interstitial fibrosis characteristic of sustained high blood pressure. The fibrotic areas break up a calcium wave as it hits them, a clue to why high blood pressure can lead to fatal arrhythmias.
