Cell on metasurface (IMAGE) Kyushu University Caption A mouse fibroblast cell imaged on a metasurface made of gold nanoparticles under a widefield fluorescence microscrope exhibits enhanced and confined emission from light-emitting paxillin protein at focal adhesions near the membrane. Researchers at Kyushu University have shown that such metasurfaces can be used with conventional fluorescence microscopes as a simple route to improve the resolution to near the diffraction limit. Illumination of the sample perpendicular to the metasurface allows for the cell body to be roughly viewed as weak emission while imaging paxillin as bright spots.
